AC/DC Info

The rock group AC/DC were established in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Often labeled as hard rock, AC/DC are regarded as innovators of heavy metal, while they have generally deemed their music to be plainly rock and roll. AC/DC are now among the highest grossing groups ever.

AC/DC went through various line-up variations prior to the release of their initial record, High Voltage, in 1975. Band membership then stayed constant up to the point bassist Mark Evans was supplanted with Cliff Williams during 1977 on the Powerage album. Tragically, within a few months of recording the album Highway to Hell, lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died in 1980, following a night of significant alcohol consumption. AC/DC momentarily thought of breaking up, however Scott's mother and father encouraged them to keep going and thus use a different singer. Vocalist Brian Johnson chosen and later the same year, AC/DC issued their highest selling record, and eventually the second highest-selling album of any artist - Back in Black.

Next up was the album For Those About to Rock We Salute You - the first AC/DC album to reach number one in the US. Drummer Rudd was dismissed in 1983 and succeeded by Simon Wright. AC/DC enjoyed a resurgence in the early 90s following the release of The Razors Edge. Phil Rudd then made a comeback in 1994 after Chris Slade was required to depart in preference to him) and led to AC/DC's 1995 album Ballbreaker.

Since 1995 AC/DC's line-up has stayed the same. The album Stiff Upper Lip was released in 2000 and was received well by music critics. AC/DC's most recent album, Black Ice, was released in October 2008 and was their greatest chart hit since For Those About to Rock.

By 2010, AC/DC had sold in total over 200 million albums internationally, including 71 million albums in the US. In 2004, AC/DC were positioned 72 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and in 2010, AC/DC were 23rd in VH1's own list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
